The Best Cakes in Sydney
When it comes to cakes, Sydney has a lot to offer. From decadent show stoppers to wholesome family favourites, here are the best bakeries to get your sweet fix.
A one-stop shop for all things cake, Black Star Pastry has a reputation for being savoury as well as sweet. The team here makes a big deal out of their "World's Most Instagrammable Cake" which is a layered almond dacquoise covered in watermelon slices and topped with a pink crown made from strawberries, grapes and rose petals. Black Star has four NSW outlets where you can sample their creations and also stock a range of savoury treats like sausage rolls and brioche.
This is a family-owned and run neighbourhood bakery where you can expect to find the most delicious savoury treats alongside some of Sydney's best cakes. The husband and wife team here practice European techniques on Australian soil and make sure they always have fresh artisan bread, superb pastries and creamy gelato on hand. You can even try their kouign amann, a buttery pastry filled with layers of caramel and cinnamon.
KOI is part cooking school, part patisserie and part dessert bar. With ingredients sourced from small growers and producers, their tiered fluffy sponges and old-fashioned favourites are some of the best in town. Their ricotta cannolis and baked ricotta cheesecake have something of a cult following, but it's their baklava that really sets them apart from the competition.
This is a traditional French boulangerie, famous for its baguettes and croissants that can be ogled and enjoyed in-store, or ordered as giant wheels to take to an event. On the cake front, they're particularly good at eclairs and tarts (try the citron meringue or pear and almond). Their flourless chocolate and lemon cakes are also worth trying.
The most exciting thing to order here is a custom cake from Claudia, whose skills are evident in everything she puts her name on. She has a love of colour and pattern that shines through in her creations, from tiny take-home smash cakes to birthday numbers the size of a car tyre.
When the time comes for your little one to celebrate their first birthday, book in a cake smash photoshoot with Chapter One Photography. These delightful sessions are the perfect way to capture your baby's reaction to their first taste of cake, whether they play with it, gobble it up or make a bit of a mess!
The word 'pasticceria' conjures images of Italy and that's exactly what this Concord cafe does. Perched behind glass are a collection of Italian delicacies including tiramisu and one of the city's best ricotta cakes. They're just as famous for their oh-so-creamy, oh-so-smooth pistachio gelato. It's so good you might just want to skip dinner to overdose on dessert here. You'll be glad you did.Cake Sydney
